Hey A12! I am having a duo recital with a friend, Lanabel Teo (15, RGS).

Here are the basic details:

12 December 2009
Esplanade Recital Studio
$12
7.30pm

Programme (highlights):
- Beethoven: Sonata for Piano and Cello in F major, Op.5 No.1
- Vitali: Chaconne in G minor
- Handel-Halvorsen: Passacaglia – Duo for Violin and Cello

The flyer images are attached below :)

“A Journey through the tube” is a classical music concert which features me playing the cello and Lanabel on the violin. The concert is titled as such because we are donating all proceeds to a foundation called Very Special Arts (VSA) Singapore, which aids disabled children through encouraging them to take up an art skill.

A “tube” is formed when the crest (or lip) of a breaking wave curls over and around a surfer, creating an open area within the wave through which the surfer can navigate. Making it through the tube is the epitome, pinnacle, all-time golden moment in surfing. In this scenario, the surfer represents disabled children, and the wave represents our society.

The light at the end of the tube would be akin to the light at the end of a long tunnel, and making it through the tube represents disabled children's desires to overcome their obstacles and achieve their dreams.

Though difficult, the journey through the tube is unbelievably beautiful, and is something that the surfer would always remember. We hope that society will prove to be a supporting wave, and help our surfers reach the end of their tube and provide them with a wonderful journey they would always be grateful for.

With this, please be generous in supporting our musical project, which is supported by the Youth ChangeMakers Grant from the National Youth Council, as well as the Singapore National Youth Orchestra. You may purchase a ticket by emailing journey1212@gmail.com or contact me at 96178776. Otherwise, just visit our website (journey1212.weebly.com) and help promote our recital. For whatever other questions you may have, feel free to contact me at the above mentioned email and/or phone number. Thank you very much! See ya there.. :p

Love,
Melissa

CLASS OUTING! :D

hello people,

after some discussion with jasmine this afternoon, we decided that it would be a better idea to have an full-day class outing instead of a 3d2n stay at a chalet.

so unless there are violent objections to the change of plans, details are as follows:

Venue: East Coast Park
Date: 8 Dec 2009 (Tues)
Time: 10am - 9pm

Activities:
1. Cycling / Rollerblading
2. Volleyball / Frisbee / Beach Soccer
3. BBQ Dinner

For the BBQ dinner, food items would include:
1. Chicken + Pork Chops (Black-pepper & Honey-glazed)
2. Fish fillet
3. Stingray
4. Otah
5. Satay
6. Baked Potatoes
7. Taiwan Sausages
8. Bee Hoon / Fried Rice (打包 from 煮炒 stall / someone volunteers to cook)
9. Marshmallows

(no chicken wings because they are a bit hard to cook and eat, unless you people demand for chicken wings to be a staple in bbq dinners)

For the drinks, it'll be the usual packet drinks like lemon tea, peach tea, JASMINE green tea, chrysanthemum tea etc.

As for logistics, items needed would include:
1. Charcoal
2. Wire mesh
3. Satay sticks (to bbq the sausages and marshmallows)
4. Disposable cutlery - spoons, forks, plates
5. Serviettes
6. Aluminium foil
7. Garbage bags
8. Ice box / Styrofoam box (to chill the drinks)
9. Ice

as much as possible we'll try to avoid getting a caterer because their prices are kinda steep. thus, we'll need each person to contribute by bringing something from the lists above.

please note that each person is to pay $15 to yannrong our treasurer, latest by 10 nov (OP day), even if you won't be going for the outing. remaining amount will be for class funds next year.

that's all for now. do check back regularly for updates :)

meanwhile, JIAYOU FOR OP EVERYONE!

cheers,
shen yang

apparently this really happened, hmm.

Moishe Plotnik's Laundry

Walking through San Francisco 's Chinatown, a tourist from the Midwest was enjoying the artistry of all the Chinese restaurants, shops, signs and banners...

When he turned a corner and saw a building with the sign'Moishe Plotnik's Laundry.'

'Moishe Plotnik?' he wondered. 'How does that belong in Chinatown ?'

He walked into the shop and saw a fairly standard looking drycleaner, although he could see that the proprietors were clearly aware of the uniqueness of the store name as there were baseball hats, T-shirts and coffee mugs emblazoned with the logo 'Moishe Plotnik's Chinese Laundry.'

The tourist selected a coffee cup as a conversation piece to take back to his office. Behind the counter was a smiling old Chinese gentleman who thanked him for his purchase.

The tourist asked, 'Can you explain how this place got a name like 'Moishe Plotnik's Laundry?''

The old man answered, 'Ah..Evleebody ask me dat. It name of owner.'

Looking around, the tourist asked, 'Is he here now?'

'It me, Me him!' replied the old man.

'Really? You're Chinese. How did you ever get a Jewish name like 'Moishe Plotnik?''

It simple' said the old man. 'Many, many year ago I come to thes country. I standing in line at 'Documentation Center of Immiglation.' Man in front of me was Jewish man from Poland. Lady at counter look at him and say to him, 'What your name?'

He say to her, 'Moishe Plotnik.'

Then she look at me and say, 'What your name?'

I say,'Sam Ting.'

to those taking A Level Chinese tomorrow, all the best :D

anyway, for the class chalet, good news is that there's one at east coast park that still has vacancies for booking :) called to check this afternoon and it's $168 per night for a double-story unit with a bbq pit in front, and it has a view of the beach. we'll most probably be staying for 3d2n, from 1st to 3rd dec. activities include night-cycling, steamboat and bbq dinners, volleyball, frisbee, watching the sunrise etc.

more details to be discussed on tuesday! and if everyone's ok with the dates, then we can finally get down to booking a unit before the vacancy is taken up :D

cheers,
shen yang
